Even with the best care, heart failure can worsen. But people who don't take care of themselves are writing a prescription for poor health. On the other hand, those who do take care of themselves sometimes can lead long and productive lives. Here is a checklist of things you can do to help yourself.

  • Visit your doctor regularly.
  • Follow your doctor's instructions.
  • Take any medication according to instructions.
  • Tell your doctor of any change in your condition.
  • Watch what you eat and avoid fatty and salty foods.
  • Don't smoke or use other tobacco products.
  • Limit alcohol.
  • Rest when needed.
  • Follow your doctor's suggestions about physical activity.
  • Avoid extremes of heat and cold, which make the heart work harder.
  • Learn to take your own blood pressure and do so according to your doctor's advice.
